Massachusetts banned mattress landfill disposal in November 2022. You cannot
put a mattress in the trash anywhere in the state — not in Boston, not in
Somerville, not in Cambridge, not anywhere. It has to go to a certified
recycling processor. That law is why mattress removal costs more than a
standard furniture pickup — the recycling process has a fee built into every
unit we haul.
Most cities in Greater Boston offer some form of mattress pickup. Here's what
each one actually costs and what it requires:
Somerville — $55 per mattress. Advance scheduling required through 311 by
calling 617-666-3311. Buildings with seven or more units are excluded entirely
— private hauling is the only option. You still have to get the mattress to
the curb yourself on your regular trash day.
Cambridge — Free recycling through UTEC, but 1 to 2 weeks of advance
scheduling required. Curbside placement by 7:00 AM on your scheduled day.
They will not come inside. During September 1st move-out season, UTEC books
up weeks in advance.
Boston — The city's residential service doesn't cover buildings with more
than six units. That's a large portion of Boston's apartment stock — Allston,
Brighton, Fenway, Dorchester, South End. Private hauling is the only option
for these buildings regardless of what you pay or how long you wait.
Malden — The City of Malden's DPW lists Marvin Junk Removal on their
official Mattress and Box Spring Recycling page as an approved private hauler.
Medford — Waste Management charges $26.91 per mattress for curbside
collection. Advance scheduling required directly through WM.
Arlington — WM charges $32 per mattress. Same advance scheduling requirement.
You move it to the curb yourself.
Everett — $30 per mattress through the city's bulk program. Still have to
get it to the curb yourself.
We skip all of it. We come inside your home, carry the mattress or box spring
out from whatever floor it's on, and handle MassDEP-compliant recycling on
every unit. Same-day when you call before 2PM. No city scheduling. No 7AM
curbside placement. No per-item fees.
We are listed on the City of Boston's and City of Malden's official mattress
recycling pages as an approved private hauler.
What we remove:
Queen & King Innerspring Mattresses
The most common haul across Greater Boston. A queen innerspring runs 50 to
80 lbs. A king innerspring runs 80 to 130 lbs. Heavy enough to need two
people on stairs and large enough to need technique getting through tight
doorframes in older Boston-area buildings. We carry them from wherever they
are — bedroom, basement, back storage room. Starts at $180.
Memory Foam Mattresses
King memory foam runs 130 to 180 lbs. The material compresses and grips
walls if you don't know how to maneuver it on a staircase. We do. Common
in newer Somerville and Cambridge condos and the Boston rental buildings
that have been updated in the last ten years. Starts at $180.
Mattress-in-a-Box
Purple, Casper, Tuft & Needle, Saatva — these brands ship compressed. Once
expanded to full size, most people can't get them back into a box or down
a staircase alone. We haul them at full size. Same price, same day.
Starts at $180.
Box Springs
50 to 70 lbs for a queen. Bulky to angle through doorframes in older
buildings but manageable with the right grip. We take box springs with
the mattress or separately — same recycling rules apply under Massachusetts
law. Starts at $180.
Crib & Twin Mattresses
Common during moves and estate cleanouts throughout Greater Boston. The
November 2022 Massachusetts ban applies regardless of mattress size. We
take crib, twin, full, queen, and king — all recycled properly through
MassDEP-certified processors. Starts at $180.
Multiple Mattresses
Clearing out a multi-bedroom estate in Medford, Winchester, or Brookline?
Turning over a Somerville triple-decker after a long-term tenant? We price
multi-mattress jobs as one trip. Text a photo and we send back one price
in minutes.
Why the delivery crew left your old mattress behind
Mattress delivery crews from Saatva, Casper, Purple, and most furniture
retailers offer old mattress removal as an add-on at checkout. It sounds
like the problem is solved. In practice, they only take it if the mattress
is already accessible — at the bedroom door, on the same floor, no tight
turns on the way out. If it's in a basement, on a third floor with a
narrow staircase, or in a building where their truck can't park near the
entrance, they leave it.
That's the call we get. New mattress delivered. Old one still in the bedroom.
Delivery crew said they couldn't take it.
We come inside, carry it out, and it's gone the same day you call.
Why the city mattress program didn't work
People call us for mattress removal after they've already tried the city
option and hit a wall. Here are the situations we hear most:
The building has too many units. Somerville excludes buildings with seven
or more units. Boston excludes buildings with more than six. If you're
in a larger apartment building — which covers most of Allston, Brighton,
Fenway, Dorchester, East Cambridge, and Somerville near the Green Line
stations — the city won't schedule you regardless of what you pay.
Can't wait 1 to 2 weeks. Cambridge's UTEC program requires advance booking.
If a new mattress just arrived, or a tenant just moved out, or you're trying
to clear a room before a move-out deadline, two weeks isn't an option.
Can't get it to the curb. City curbside pickup means the mattress has to
be outside — at the curb, by 7AM. Getting a king memory foam mattress from
a second-floor bedroom in a Somerville triple-decker to the curb at 7AM
without help isn't realistic for most people.
September 1st — UTEC is already booked. Cambridge's move-out season fills
up UTEC's schedule weeks in advance. If you're trying to schedule mattress
pickup in August for a September 1st move-out, the wait time makes it
impossible.
We pick up same-day. We come inside. We handle the recycling.
One call, one price, it's gone.
