Most people find out how this works the hard way. Here's the short version.

Curbside appliance pickup costs $32 per item.

Arlington contracts with Waste Management for appliance collection. Every appliance — fridge, washer, dryer, stove, dishwasher, AC unit, dehumidifier, microwave — is $32 each. You call WM at 1-800-972-4545 or go to wm.com, pay first, then schedule a day. After that, you get the appliance outside yourself and have it at the curb on the day they come. Appliances are banned from regular weekly pickup. Leave one out without scheduling and it stays there.

The Recycling Center at 51 Grove Street won't take them.

The Town's drop-off facility at 51 Grove Street accepts scrap metal, electronics, textiles, and a range of other items. Appliances are not on that list. Their page says it directly: contact WM for appliance pickup. If you drive a washing machine to 51 Grove Street, you're driving it back home.

Arlington Center

Mass Ave through the center of town, the Regent Theatre, Robbins Library, Arlington Town Hall. The residential streets off the center corridor — Pleasant Street, Lake Street, Grove Street, Maple Street — are Victorians and colonials, a lot of them owner-occupied for thirty or forty years. When a kitchen finally gets updated or a family clears out after a parent passes, the appliances coming out are usually old and heavy. We run Arlington Center jobs regularly.

East Arlington

The densest part of town. Triple-deckers and two-families on Columbia Road, Medford Street, Linwood Street, and the streets between Mass Ave and Alewife Brook. High tenant turnover, constant move-outs, buildings where the laundry is in the basement and the only way up is a back staircase built in 1920. Spy Pond Condominiums at 18 Hamilton Rd has 142 units right on the Minuteman Bikeway — we get calls from there regularly. The streets around the Orvis Road Historic District, the blocks near Spy Pond Park — we know all of them.

Arlington Heights

Mass Ave heading west toward Route 2, past Jimmy's Steer House. Watermill Place at 990 Massachusetts Ave is a 127-unit condo building we've worked in more than once. The colonials and capes on Forest Street, Appleton Street, and the streets near Robbins Farm Park have basements with appliances that come out during renovations and cleanouts. We run the Heights every week.

Jason Heights

Old homes, big lots, established families. The streets near the Jason Russell House on Jason Street and Highland Ave are where people have lived in the same house for a long time. When a kitchen gets redone or a basement gets cleared, we get the call.

Morningside

The northeast corner of Arlington near Mystic Lakes and the Winchester line. Larger properties, bigger homes. Estate cleanouts and appliance hauls from longtime owners are the most common jobs from Morningside. Streets near Mystic Street, Hemlock Street, and the roads heading toward the reservoir.

Turkey Hill & Arlington Reservoir Area

Western Arlington, hilly terrain, bigger garages and basements. Appliances accumulate here the same way they do everywhere else — slowly, over years, until someone decides it's finally time. We haul from here regularly.

Kelwyn Manor & Spy Pond Area

A quiet pocket of mid-century capes and colonials along the edge of Spy Pond. Houses that were built around the same time tend to have appliances the same age. Estate cleanouts and single-appliance hauls from longtime owners are the most common calls.

The $32 curbside program is fine if your timing is flexible, you can get the appliance outside yourself, and you only have one item. For most situations, at least one of those three things isn't true.

WM doesn't do same-day. You schedule, you wait, you pick a day. If a contractor pulled your old fridge during a kitchen demo and it's sitting in the middle of your kitchen, waiting a week for WM isn't how this gets solved. Call us before 2PM and we can usually be there the same day.

The appliance is on an upper floor or in the basement.

WM curbside means the appliance has to be at the curb. Getting a washing machine from a second-floor laundry room to the street is a two-person job, minimum. We carry it from wherever it is — you don't touch it.

At $32 per item, three appliances runs $96 in WM fees. You're also scheduling multiple pickups or hoping WM takes everything in one visit. We price multiple appliances as one job, and we do it in one trip.

You're a landlord.
