Salem uses Waste Management for residential bulk and appliance pickup — and the city is explicit about one thing most residents don't know: Salem will not pick up cleanouts. If you're moving out or clearing a house, it is your responsibility to dispose of large amounts of debris. A private hauler is required — that's us.

Here's how Salem's system works for individual items:

Bulk furniture items cost $20 per item — call Waste Management at 800-972-4545 or book at wm.com to schedule. White goods (appliances) also cost $20 per item as of July 1, 2025 — scheduled the same way through WM. Freon-containing appliances like refrigerators, freezers, and AC units are included in white goods at $20 per item, or can be dropped off at E-Waste events at Salem High School (March 28, June 27, September 26, December 12, 8AM–12PM). Mattresses and box springs cost $40 per item and must be scheduled separately through UTEC Inc. at utecinc.org — Waste Management no longer handles mattress pickup through standard bulk scheduling. Construction debris is never collected curbside under any circumstances.
