Medford's Waste Management Appliance Rules — What It Costs & What We Skip

Medford's bulk item and appliance collection is handled by Waste Management — and it comes with fees and scheduling requirements most residents don't know about until they try it.

Appliances and white goods are only collected on Tuesdays and must be scheduled in advance by calling 800-972-4545 or visiting wm.com. TVs and monitors also require advance scheduling for Tuesday pickup. Refrigerators and freezers must have their doors removed before curbside placement — it's a city requirement. Construction debris is not eligible for city bulk pickup under any circumstances. Mattresses cannot go to the landfill — Massachusetts banned mattress landfill disposal in November 2022.

Starting July 1, 2027, Medford is moving to a Pay As You Throw program where trash collection drops to every other week — making private haulers even more essential for anything that doesn't fit the new schedule.

We skip the entire process. We come inside your Medford property, carry everything out from wherever it sits, and haul it away the same day. No WM scheduling, no Tuesday wait, no door removal.

We Know Medford — Every Neighborhood, Every Building Type

Medford spans 8.7 square miles and nine distinct neighborhoods — and each one is different. West Medford has pre-Civil War era colonials with deep basements, narrow staircases, and original cast iron heating systems. The Hillside near Tufts has dense walk-up housing and constant tenant turnover every May and September. Wellington has multifamily buildings along the Mystic River and newer condos at Wellington Woods and Rivers Edge. South Medford borders Somerville and has the same triple-decker stock we work in every day — straight up Main Street from our base. Downtown Medford Square has older commercial buildings and condos. Glenwood has Victorian and Colonial homes along Salem Street. North Medford has larger lots and suburban-style homes with full garages.

We've hauled appliances out of Tufts faculty housing on Professors Row, cleared basements off High Street in West Medford, run estate cleanouts along the Mystic River in Glenwood, and handled landlord turnovers near Wellington Circle. We know the difference between a Wellington multifamily with loading dock access and a West Medford colonial where the only way out is down a tight front staircase. We come prepared every time.

We work with Medford landlords and property managers throughout the Tufts turnover season. Same-day available, upfront pricing, no call centers — you talk to Marvin directly.

Getting rid of an appliance in Medford costs more than most people expect before they call us.

Medford contracts with Waste Management for appliance and bulk item pickup. White goods — refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, AC units, dehumidifiers, lawnmowers, exercise equipment — cost $26.91 per item for curbside collection. Televisions and monitors cost $41.40 each. You contact WM directly at 1-800-972-4545 to pay and schedule. Appliances are picked up on Tuesdays only. You still have to get the item to the curb yourself.

Miss that Tuesday window and you wait a full week.

If you're in a building with more than a couple of items — clearing out a basement, turning over a rental unit, doing a kitchen renovation — WM's curbside service isn't set up for that. They handle one or two items per scheduled pickup, not full hauls.

We skip the entire process. We come inside your Medford home, carry the appliance out from wherever it sits, and haul it away the same day you call. No WM account. No Tuesday wait. No $26.91 per item. One price before we start, everything out in one trip.

Same-day when you call before 2PM. Starts at $120

What we remove:

Refrigerators & Freezers

Old refrigerators, chest freezers, upright freezers, and mini-fridges — out of the kitchen, the basement, the garage. The most common call we get: a new fridge just got delivered and the crew left the old one because the basement stairs weren't part of the deal. We carry it out from wherever it landed. MassDEP-compliant refrigerant recovery included. Starts at $120.

Washers & Dryers

New washer arrives. Installer hooks it up and tells you the old one isn't their problem. Now you have two machines in a laundry room built for one. Medford's older two-families and triple-deckers — particularly in the Hillside area near Tufts and the dense residential blocks around Medford Square — often have laundry in the basement at the bottom of a narrow staircase. We've done this job in every neighborhood in the city. Starts at $120.

Stoves & Ovens

Gas and electric stoves removed from Medford kitchens. Delivery crew pushed the old one to the side of the kitchen and left. It sits there while you cook around it. We come inside, carry it out. Gas appliances need to be disconnected by a plumber before we arrive — we handle everything after that. Starts at $120.

Dishwashers

Contractor pulled the old one during a kitchen renovation and left it in the garage or on the back porch. We pick up contractor-displaced appliances from Medford homes regularly. Starts at $120.

Air Conditioners & Window Units

Summer ends, the window AC comes out of the window and goes into the basement. Three years later there are four of them down there and none of them work. Or a Medford building near Wellington just upgraded to central air and there are six window units that need to go. We take them all in one trip. MassDEP-compliant refrigerant handling on every unit. Starts at $120.

Dehumidifiers

One of the most common single-appliance calls we get from Medford — older homes near the Mystic River, the lower streets in Wellington, and the basements throughout the Hillside area run wet. Dehumidifiers run constantly and eventually burn out. The replacement shows up, the old one is 60 lbs of dead weight on the basement floor, and nobody wants to drag it up the stairs. We come get it. Starts at $120.

Water Heaters

Plumber installs the new tank and leaves the old one in the basement. That's the job they were paid for. The old tank is 150 lbs of steel sitting exactly where the plumber left it. We pick up contractor-left appliances from Medford basements regularly. Starts at $120.

Exercise Equipment

Treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, weight sets — these cost $26.91 each under Medford's WM program, and you still have to get them to the curb yourself. Most people can't move a 300-lb treadmill out of a basement without help. We carry it out from wherever it is. Starts at $120.

Multiple Appliances

Kitchen renovation on Boston Ave, or a rental unit near Wellington Circle turning over between tenants? We price multi-appliance jobs as one job — not per item. WM charges $26.91 per appliance. Three appliances is over $80 in scheduling fees before anyone has moved anything — and Tuesdays only. Text a photo of everything and we send back one price in minutes

Why the WM process fails most Medford situations

You need it gone today — not next Tuesday.

The delivery crew dropped off your new appliance and the old one needs to go now. WM doesn't do same-day. Call us before 2PM and we can usually be there the same day.

You can't get it to the curb yourself.

WM curbside means the appliance has to be outside. A second-floor washer, a basement chest freezer, a treadmill in a finished basement — these aren't items most people can move alone. We carry everything from inside your home.

You have more than one or two items.

WM is built for one-off pickups, not full hauls. If you're clearing out a basement in West Medford or doing a full kitchen renovation in the Hillside area, calling WM for four separate Tuesday pickups over four weeks isn't realistic. We come once, take everything.

You're a landlord.

Tenant moved out of a unit near Tufts and left a washer, dryer, and broken fridge. Your cleaning crew starts tomorrow. We can usually be there the same day you call. One text, one price, unit is clear.

The delivery crew backed out at the door.

Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's — their haul-away service works when the appliance is accessible. When they see a cast iron-railed staircase in a West Medford colonial or a tight back staircase in a Medford Hillside triple-decker, they leave. We don't.

Where we work in Medford every week

Medford Square & Downtown

The streets around Medford Square — Main Street, Riverside Ave, the blocks near the Chevalier Theatre and the Condon Shell — are a mix of older multifamilies and condo conversions. High rental turnover near the Green Line stations. Appliance hauls and landlord turnovers are constant here.

Medford Hillside & Tufts University Area

The Hillside neighborhood runs along Boston Avenue and College Avenue near the Tufts campus. Dense triple-deckers, walk-ups, and older two-families with basement laundry and tight staircases. Tufts move-out season in May and August fills these streets. We run hauls through the Hillside every week. When a delivery crew looks at a Hillside staircase and backs out, this is the call that comes to us.

West Medford

West Medford runs along the Mystic River toward the Arlington and Winchester borders. Colonial revival homes on tree-lined streets, the 50-acre Brooks Estate at 275 Grove Street, Mystic Lakes State Park, and the West Medford commuter rail station at the corner of High and Playstead. These are larger homes with bigger basements — and bigger basements hold more appliances over time. Estate cleanouts and full basement hauls in West Medford regularly involve refrigerators, freezers, and exercise equipment that have been down there for years. The houses near Bistro 5 on High Street and the blocks toward Winchester — these are our most common West Medford appliance calls.

Wellington

Wellington sits around Wellington Circle on the Everett border, anchored by the Wellington Orange Line station. Wellington Woods at 320 Middlesex Ave has newer luxury condos with high unit turnover. Wellington Arms is a large complex with consistent appliance haul volume. The denser residential streets between Riverside Ave and the Malden River have older housing stock with basement laundry that fills up with replaced appliances. We're in Wellington every week.

Lawrence Estates

Lawrence Estates is one of Medford's most established neighborhoods — tree-lined streets, vintage colonials, seven miles from Boston near the Middlesex Fells Reservation. These homes have been in the same families for decades in some cases. When a kitchen gets updated or an estate gets cleared, there's usually more than one appliance coming out. Estate cleanouts and multi-appliance hauls are the most common calls from Lawrence Estates.

Glenwood

Glenwood is one of the densest neighborhoods in Medford — around 3,000 people in 0.2 square miles along the Somerville border. Small to medium single-family homes and apartment complexes packed together. High rental turnover, constant move-outs, appliance hauls from tight spaces with no alley access. We navigate Glenwood's parking restrictions regularly.

North Medford & Middlesex Fells Area

North Medford borders the Middlesex Fells Reservation — larger lots, more suburban character, bigger homes with more storage. Appliance hauls and garage cleanouts from North Medford tend to be larger jobs: basements that hold two or three generations of appliances, garages with exercise equipment that never made it back upstairs.

Furniture Removal in Medford, MA — Starts at $120

Marvin junk removal removing furniture in Medford ma 02155

Not all furniture is the same job. A standard sofa and a sectional sleeper sofa are completely different hauls — different weight, different mechanics, different tools. Most people calling for furniture removal don't know this going in, and most companies quoting over the phone don't ask. We do, because it changes how we show up.

Here's what we actually deal with in Medford — and what each type of furniture involves.

Standard Sofas & Couches

A standard three-seat sofa typically weighs between 120 and 300 lbs depending on the frame, upholstery, and construction. A lightweight fabric sofa with an engineered wood frame sits at the lower end. A solid hardwood-framed leather sofa with dense cushioning sits at the higher end. The average is around 200 lbs — manageable for two people on a flat floor, a different calculation on a staircase.

The problem in Medford is that most staircases aren't straight. The triple-deckers in the Hillside area near Boston Avenue have narrow stairwells with a 90-degree turn at the landing. The older colonials in West Medford near the Brooks Estate have stairs built when furniture was smaller. The walk-ups near Tufts on College Avenue and Curtis Street have hallways that are 30 to 32 inches wide — the standard interior door width in older New England construction, which is tighter than modern builds that run 32 to 36 inches.

A sofa that fits fine in a living room becomes a geometry problem at the top of those stairs.

We've gotten sofas out of every stairwell configuration in Medford. We know before we arrive whether we need to tilt it, stand it on end, or take a door off its hinges. We carry the tools. We carry spare moving blankets to protect walls and banisters. Nothing gets scratched.

Starts at $120.

Sectionals

A sectional is two to five interlocking sections that together can weigh 300 to 600 lbs depending on size, configuration, and materials. A standard three-piece L-shaped sectional runs 400 to 500 lbs total. The larger U-shaped configurations, common in Medford's newer condos near Wellington Circle and Lawrence Estates, can hit 600 lbs. Each individual section typically weighs 80 to 150 lbs — which is why the modular design matters.

The issue with sectionals isn't just the weight — it's the combination of weight, width, and the fact that most people don't know how their sectional comes apart. Every sectional has connector brackets underneath — usually metal clips or locking tabs — that have to be released before the sections separate. Try to carry a sectional without disconnecting the sections first and you're hauling an irregular 12-to-14-foot object that can't turn corners and will catch every wall it touches.

We carry the right tools to disconnect sectional sections on-site — hex keys, flathead screwdrivers, pliers for stuck brackets. We find the connectors, release them, and carry each section out separately. The walls stay clean. The banister stays intact. The doorframe comes out undamaged.

This is the job Medford Hillside landlords call about most after a tenant move-out — a sectional left in a third-floor apartment that needs to come down a staircase that was never designed for a 14-foot couch.

Starts at $120.

Sleeper Sofas

A sleeper sofa is in a different category from a regular sofa or sectional. The pull-out mattress and steel frame mechanism inside typically add 50 to 70 lbs to what would otherwise be a standard couch. Most queen sleeper sofas weigh around 150 to 250 lbs — with standard models around 180 lbs, and premium hardwood-platform models reaching 250 lbs. The weight is also distributed differently from a regular sofa — it's concentrated in the center of the frame where the steel folding mechanism sits, which makes it back-heavy and awkward on stairs.

The other issue with sleeper sofas is the fold-out frame. It has to be folded in and secured before the couch can be moved. If the mechanism is old or broken — which it often is in Medford's older rental housing stock — the frame won't lock in place and flops open mid-carry. We know how to secure stuck mechanisms before anything gets lifted.

We've carried sleeper sofas out of second-floor Wellington apartments, down narrow back staircases in Glendale multifamilies, and out of basement-level units in South Medford condo buildings near the Tufts campus. The weight is manageable with the right technique. The mechanism is the part most people underestimate.

Starts at $120.

Recliners

Standard fabric recliners weigh 80 to 150 lbs. Power recliners — the ones with electric motors, steel reinforcement, and built-in USB ports — typically weigh 150 to 300 lbs because of the motor weight, frame reinforcement, and additional steel components. The issue with power recliners isn't just the weight — it's the rigid footrest mechanism that makes them difficult to tilt safely on stairs without the right grip and technique. We carry these regularly from finished basement TV rooms in North Medford and West Medford colonials, where recliners tend to live after they've been replaced upstairs.

Starts at $120.

Bed Frames, Headboards & Box Springs

Bed frames come apart — but not all of them come apart the same way. Platform bed frames with storage drawers require full disassembly: removing the drawers, releasing the side rails, detaching the headboard. Older metal bed frames with spring-loaded side rail connectors can be collapsed without tools if you know where to press. Solid wood bed frames — common in Medford's West Medford and Lawrence Estates homes — may have been assembled in the bedroom and require unscrewing to come back out.

We disassemble bed frames on-site. We carry the right tools — Allen wrenches in metric and imperial, screwdrivers, a rubber mallet for stuck frame joints. A bed frame that took two people an afternoon to assemble takes us about 15 minutes to take apart and carry out.

Box springs run 50 to 70 lbs for a queen and 40 to 60 lbs for a full — manageable weight, but bulky to maneuver through doorways and around corners in older Medford buildings. We carry them flat when the hallway allows and on edge when it doesn't.

Starts at $120.

Dressers, Bureaus & Armoires

A standard six-drawer dresser runs 100 to 150 lbs. A solid wood armoire — the kind found in older West Medford colonials and Lawrence Estates homes — can be 200 to 300 lbs and may have sat in the same bedroom for 40 years. These don't disassemble. They carry as one heavy piece.

The problem in older Medford homes is doorframe width. Interior doors in pre-1970s New England construction are commonly 30 to 32 inches wide. A wide armoire that moved into the house before a renovation narrowed the doorframe may need to come out through a window or be taken apart at the joints. We check this before we lift anything. If it has to be disassembled, we disassemble it. If it can tilt through the frame, we tilt it. We don't guess and we don't force.

Starts at $120.

Dining Sets, Tables & Desks

Dining tables with removable leaves come apart easily. Solid wood pedestal dining tables — common in the formal dining rooms of West Medford colonials — are one piece and run 150 to 250 lbs depending on wood type. The base has to be unbolted from the top on pedestal tables, or the whole thing carries as one heavy slab.

L-shaped office desks are almost always flatpack furniture assembled in the room — they can't come out assembled because they're too long to turn corners in most Medford hallways. We carry the tools to take them apart in sections and move each piece out separately.

Starts at $120.
